Tolo, Greece

Tolo (also known as Tolon) is a village in Greece on the Peloponnese peninsula. Although it is a relatively new addition to the map by Greek standards, its modern history starting in 1830, the area where it is situated and its surroundings go back much further. The bay of Tolon was first written about by Homer, as was Asini in the Iliad, named as one of the cities whose fleet took part in the Trojan War. Following that and the alliance between the Venetians, the Germans, and the Polish against the Ottoman Empire, the chief of the allied forces, Vice-admiral Francesco Morosini was ordered to capture the capital of the Peloponnese, Nafplio at that time, and the bay of Tolon was chosen as a place suitable as a base of operations for his expedition as it was the safest place in the region, while the shore was used for the army to camp. After the success of his expedition and until 1718 AD, when the area again was occupied by the Turkish, Tolon was used as a secondary naval station for the Venetian fleet.

TOLON

Tolon, a historic seaside village, is situated in the Argolic Gulf, on the Peloponnese peninsula. It is first mentioned around 1342 AD, and its name is derived from the Catalan bishop Jean TOLON from Balaguer – Lerida,Spain.
In 1342 the city of Andravida was the seat of the Catholic Diocese of the north and central Peloponnese, under whose jurisdiction the village of Tolon was also at the time.
On the crown of the small islet called “ROMVI” -  Port TOLON, opposite Tolo, stand the remains of impressive Cyclopean walls which extend to a length of 100 metres and width of 1 metre, built of cyclopean stone blocks.
Romvi is similar to the shape of two approximate rhombuses (diamond shapes) submerged in the bay of Tolo, which is why the spelling romvoi (plural) opposed to romvi (singular) is proposed.
Historians inform us that on the crown of the islet,Jean TOLON is most likely buried under the remains of a very old church whose walls are of great historical  interest.Scattered on others parts of the islet “Romvi”-Port TOLON, are remains of a Venetian naval station,as well as various other buildings and houses. This naval station was built during the Venetian rule ( 1686 – 1715 ) .
In July 1686 the Venetian Admiral Francesco Morosini disembarked troops on the sandy beach of Port TOLON ( Tolon ) <1200 soldiers and cavalry>.After crossing land on foot, this military force quickly reached the Venetian fortress of Palamidi in Nafplio. They suprised the Turkish guard taking control of the Palamidi fortress and then of Nafplio on 27/7/1686.
Later on in 1831 the Municipality of Minoa was founded by the first Cretan inhabitants. The Cretan dialect is still spoken by some of the local inhabitants of Tolo.
During the Second World War,with the Nazi and fascist occupation of Greece following the crumbling of the Greek – Italian front, British ships departed from the shore of Tolo with the allied  British,Australian and New Zealand forces – in April 1941. A tough battle took place between the departing British  troops and the invading Nazi – fascist forces and about 10-12 soldiers were killed on both sides.
In more recent times, 1952, Tolon was visited by the Prime Minister of Great Britain Winston Churchill, accompanied by the Greek ship – owner, the unforgettable Aristotelis Onassis and the famous soprano Maria Kallas, on Onassis’ cruiser  “Christina”.
Tolo has beautiful sandy beaches, a healthy climate and clean, crystal clear waters. It offers fresh air, fresh fish and all abudance of natural goods. Yet, it’s a famous worldwide resort.
It has a population of about 1500 permanent residents and resides under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Assini in the Southern Argolid.
In former British maps dated back to 1518 the name Port Tolon “Gulf of Nauplia” is noted as – The Argolic Gulf.
Tolon formerly a small fishing village, has now acquired a more modern appearance and is known worlwide.

Tolo, Greece – Modern Tourism or Ancient History?

Tolo is a small Greek village situated in the Peloponnese peninsula. It is popularly known as Tolon. According to the Greek atlas, Tolo has been recently added to the map as a distinctive town but, in fact, it has a rich history that dates back to the early part of the 19th century and is mentioned as far back as around 2000 years ago.
The famous poet Homer wrote ‘The bay of Tolon\’ based on this town where the fleet took part in the Trojan War. Later in history, the bay at Tolo was home to the ships that took refuge during the Byzantine War. After the end of rule of the Byzantines, Tolo came under the Frankish rule, after which it was captured by the Venetians and further by the Ottomans. A treaty was signed between the Venetians, the Germans, and the Polish against the Ottoman Empire, where in they decided to make Tolon the base of all their military operations to protect what we now know as modern Greece.
After the end of the Greek Revolution, a lot of refugees from Crete migrated to Tolo and the mid 20th century saw the rise of the town as an important place for tourists due to the tremendous beauty of the area. The tourism industry in the town grew rapidly, especially in the peak summer seasons, with the Greeks offering great hospitality to visiting tourists from many countries. Tolo is also also an important transit destination because of the accessibility to notable Greek archaeological sites.
Among the major sight-seeing places in Tolo is a monument building called Zoodhohos Pigi established in 1688 in the form of a church and the remains of the fort on the island of Daskaleio alongside the bay of Tolon.
The Tolo Beach is probably the best beach in the area, boasting cool and crystal clear water with golden sand along the length of it\’s coast. Popular for swimming and sunbathing, the beach is close to the main town with easy access between the two.
Tolo is believed to be one of the busiest Greek tourist destinations, attracting many people from the northern part of Europe and traffic can be very busy during the summer season.
The local people are extremely friendly in nature and greet the tourists with a lot of warmth. Fishing is still a large part of local economy and, on the whole, Tolo has retained its historical importance and traditional Greek charm giving all nationalities a unique place to visit.
